Chairman Sir Anwar Pervez, 81, has built Bestway from a single grocery store in west London, opened in 1963, to become Britain’s biggest privately owned cashand- carry group. In 2014 it acquired the Co-op’s pharmacy business for £620m. This division — rebranded as Well Pharmacy — now operates 798 stores across the UK. Other acquisitions, including last year’s purchase for £182m of cement manufacturer Lafarge Pakistan, now Pakcem, helped to lift sales by 20%, to £3.1bn, in 2015.
