Richard Biffa started this firm more than 100 years ago, collecting ashes from London power stations. Today, its 2,100 refuse trucks hit the road every morning to collect waste, and the company prides itself on its recycling services. Earlier this year, chief executive Ian Wakelin, 53, announced a £6.5m investment in the company’s plastic recycling facility on Teesside, which will double capacity. Biffa is reportedly examining a stock market flotation.
