This London firm says its technology, each day, facilitates more than half of all global transactions of the new crypto-currency, Bitcoin. Its platform hosts 10m “Bitcoin wallets” with users able to store, send and receive the virtual currency. Started in 2011 by Nicolas Cary, Ben Reeves and Peter Smith, in 2014 Blockchain secured a $31m investment, the largest ever first-round funding for a digital currency firm, with Sir Richard Branson among the investors. Blockchain says its technology could play a part in transforming the way the entire financial system operates; in the future transferring items of value – such as land and commodities – could be as easy as using the instant messaging service Whatsapp.
