This Warrington firm owns more aircraft carriers than the Royal Navy, recycling two decommissioned US vessels at its facilities in Texas. Led by Chris Sheppard, 42, the third generation of his family at the helm, EMR recycles 10m tons of metal a year at more than 150 sites worldwide. It has invested in technology to recover more from scrapped cars, recycling the plastics and using the remaining rubber and foam to fuel its power plant. Sales fell by 20% in 2015 because of a sustained decline in global commodity prices.
