About 75m passengers passed through Heathrow last year, an increase of more than 1m compared with 2014, and by the value of the goods passing through it Heathrow is the UK’s largest port. The independent Airports Commission has recommended adding a third runway, which it estimates will contribute up to £211bn in economic growth, and 180,000 new jobs. It is owned by a consortium of investors and run by chief executive John Holland- Kaye, 51. Lord Deighton, 60, took over as chairman last month.
