After selling Applied Language Solutions — a Fast Track 100 alumnus — to Capita in 2011, chief executive Gavin Wheeldon, 42, started Purple the following year. Brands such as McDonald’s and Hyatt now use its platform to provide free public wi-fi. Its software also analyses the data to help clients understand consumers and develop personalised marketing campaigns. Partnerships with global telecoms firms and offices in Austin, Madrid, Melbourne and Santiago have helped it roll out its technology to more than 120 countries. The Oldham firm has raised £9m from investors, including the former Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy, as sales grew to £5.6m in the year to January 2018.
