Renoir Shoes

Peter McDermott started out as an entrepreneur in 1976 selling platform shoes for men. He used a redundancy package from ICI to found Renoir Shoes, which now distributes Pod shoes, a brand aimed at the youth casual market, to independent shoe retailers across Britain. The company, based on Teesside, also operates 220 concessions in Evans stores. Renoir’s sales have grown 97% a year, from £1.6m in 1996 to £12.1m in 1999. Paul McDermott, Peter’s son and joint managing director, attributes this to an increase in the number of Evans concessions, where Renoir, in his words, ‘sells more generous fittings for the larger woman’. The shoes, imported from Spain and Portugal, are sold under Evans’ own brand.
