Founder Chris Dawson, 64, opened this company’s 100th store last year in his home town of Plymouth, where he started as a market trader. He founded The Range in 1989, selling leisure, home and garden products. Dawson has made a name for himself as an astute dealmaker – when the MFI chain went bust, he bought stock from the administrator, paying £3m for goods that were then valued at £68m. New store openings – it now has 122 – helped sales grow 17% to an annualised £661m in its latest year.
