Chris Dawson’s first experience of retailing was at the age of seven, selling ice creams outside his local pub. Although he was later sidetracked by market trading, auctioneering and motorbike racing, he returned to retailing in 1989 by opening the first CDS Superstore, now branded The Range Home & Leisure. There are 13 stores in southern England and Wales, each selling 70,000 different products at knockdown prices. The company’s profits have grown 60% a year from £1.1m in 2000 to £4.4m in 2003.
