This London firm was founded in 2010 by Taavet Hinrikus, 36, who was Skype’s first employee, and fellow Estonian Kristo Käärmann, 38, who were frustrated by the high fees charged to send money abroad. TransferWise’s platform allows it to bypass the traditional international bank payments system. It says it now handles more than £1bn each month. The company has more than 1m customers, and revenue hit £67m this year. It has been valued at more than $1bn after raising $117m from backers, including Sir Richard Branson.
