In 2016 Wates built 646 homes, started on 1,443 residential units and maintained 500,000 properties. Its sales grew 20% to £1.4bn with profits of £27m; including joint ventures, profits were £45m. Wates started 2017 with a £3.6bn order book — its current projects include a £40m rebuild of the Royal College of Surgeons and a £21m training facility for BAE Systems Submarines. Chairman James Wates, 57 — a fourth-generation member of the founding family — and chief executive Andrew Davies, 53, lead the company.
