Launched from a shed on Ashton golf course in 1978, American Golf now operates 73 retail outlets across Britain, selling golf equipment and accessories. These outlets are staffed by golfers with an average handicap of seven. In 2004, chief executive Jonathan Fellows led a management buyout funded by the venture-capital firm LDC, which took a 49% stake. Since then, the company has added 12 stores and says its market share has risen 20%, making it one of the largest specialist golf retailers in the world. Profits at the company have grown 49% a year, from £2.4m in 2002 to £8m in 2005.
