Originally a mail-order firm, the White Company now also sells its selection of understated bed and bath products, fragrances, furniture, clothes and accessories through 25 shops around the country as well as in concessions at Selfridges. Founded by Chrissie Rucker in 1994, when she was finding it difficult to buy reasonably priced, quality bedlinen and housewares, the upmarket retailer now has almost 1m customers on its database. Profits have grown 44% a year from £2m in 2006 to £5.9m in 2009 under managing director Patricia Alford-Burnett.
