2005 Tech Track 100

Rank: 1   Daisy Communications

Launched with £20,000 borrowed against founderís home

The environmentalist Matthew Riley says a desire to make the world a greener place inspired him to launch a company that encourages electronic communication. Daisy Communications, which has a paperless-office policy, has developed software that helps internet service providers (ISPs), including Tiscali and Energis, with back-office operations such as online billing and technical support for their business customers. The software logs calls, bills the customer by e-mail and collects payment on the ISPs' behalf, without the need for any paperwork.

The other half of the Lancashire company's revenue comes from reselling broadband, mobile and fixed-line telephony as well as call- conferencing. Customers are offered the chance to change their internet or phone service through Daisy's website. Those who accept, transfer their voice and data lines to Daisy, which in turn sources the best carrier and provides customer support.

Sales have grown sharply since Riley, a former call-centre software developer at Deutsche Telekom, launched the company in 2001. They have rocketed 458% a year from £290,000 in 2002 to £9m in 2004. Daisy made a small loss that year but expects to break into profit this year.

When turnover hits £50m, which Riley hopes will be in the next three years, the company will look at expanding into the Continent. Riley, who owns 100% of the company, hopes to float Daisy on the stock market in the next three years.
