Rank: 39 bmi
Founded in 1938 to train RAF pilots, this company now offers more than 2,500 flights a week. Operating from Heathrow and regional airports, the Derby-based airline has been adding medium-haul routes, most recently five new American destinations, along with services to Tel Aviv, Kiev and Saudi Arabia. It also runs the budget airline BMIbaby, and in 2007 absorbed BA’s franchise operator BMED for a reported £30m. The German airline Lufthansa, which already owns 30% of BMI, is reported to have finalised a deal to buy chairman Sir Michael Bishop's 50% stake. Sales were £1,046m in 2008.
