In the early 1970s Abdul Tayub was blocked from starting a business in his native Malawi where it was difficult for Asians to win trading licences. Undaunted, Tayub emigrated to Britain in 1976 and started Crown Crest with his brother Aziz. The group supplies branded groceries to small independent retailers from depots in Leicester, Coventry and Nottingham. Last year it acquired 340 Poundstretcher retail stores. Post-acquisition sales increased by 90% to £287.1m in 2009.
