Has re-engineered planes and motorbikes to use hydrogen fuel cells

This Loughborough company is developing hydrogen fuel cells to provide clean energy for applications ranging from consumer electronics to taxis. It is working with Scottish and Southern Energy to design combined heat and power systems. A clean energy scooter developed with Suzuki recently won EU approval, and the company’s partnership with Boeing led last year to the first flight of a plane powered by fuel cells. Intelligent Energy has research operations in California and offices in India and Japan. Under chief executive Henri Winand, sales grew 72% a year from £1.5m in 2007 to £7.8m in 2010, when the company lost £11m before tax. Nevertheless, it recently raised a further £15m in two funding rounds, mainly from existing investors.
