2012 Tech Track 100

Rank: 5   ZBD Solutions

Spun out of Qinetiq in 2000 and spent eight years developing its 'e-paper' technology

Since being spun out of defence firm Qinetiq in 2000, ZBD has developed ultra low-power bistable LCD screens that can be used as a high-tech paper substitute. Customers include supermarket chains in 20 European countries, which use this ‘epaper’ for price labels as they can change prices and customer information remotely. Other uses are being found in sectors including manufacturing and healthcare. Ascot-based ZBD is backed by DFJ Esprit, TTP Ventures, Dow Chemical Company and Trillium International. Sales grew 213% a year from £396,000 in 2009 to £12.1m in 2012 under chief executive Shaun Gray.
