2012 Tech Track 100

Rank: 18   Bowman Power

Its generators capture lost heat energy from engine exhaust flow

Entrepreneur Tony Davies had the idea behind this business when working in Japan in the 1990s. Southampton-based Bowman Power makes turbogenerators that capture heat expelled by engines, and convert it into usable power, improving their efficiency and green credentials. Almost all of its sales are to a handful of power generation companies in mainland Europe and Australia. Turnover has grown 117% a year, from £826,000 in 2008 to £8.4m in 2011, as the company has commercialised its intellectual property. Its venture capital backers include Octopus Ventures, WHEB Ventures and I2BF Global Ventures.
