2012 Tech Track 100

Rank: 27   P2i

Its technology can protect up to 100,000 mobile phones per day from water damage

This Abingdon firm makes machines that can protect products from water damage by applying a liquid-repellent coating one-thousandth the thickness of a human hair. This is used on products including Motorola smartphones, Timberland shoes, and hearing aids. Led by chief executive Carl Francis, P2i has grown by expanding in Asia and commercialising its product. Sales grew 91% a year, from £862,000 in 2008 to £6m in 2011. Backers include Unilever Ventures and, in January 2012, P2i raised an extra £12m from Naxos Capital and Ombu Group.
