Manchester firm Metronet (UK) provides wireless internet services in Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool and Birmingham, with customers including Manchester City Council, Grant Thornton, Laing O'Rourke and others that rely on 24/7 connectivity. The company employs technicians around-the-clock and has network monitoring to resolve issues as they arise, and often before customers are aware of them. Chief executive Elliott Mueller attributes growth to word-of-mouth recommendations and by keeping technical support in-house. Sales increased 43% a year from £2m in 2009 to £5.9m in 2012. In June, private equity firm LDC bought a majority stake in the company for £11m.
