Chris Bradbury used to sell hardware to the premium-rate telephone industry. But in 1994 he launched 4D Telecom to operate premium-rate chat lines and text services for telephone dating. The company also operates a television dating channel and a call centre that handles overspill calls for customers such as GMTV. Bradbury claims that its 2001 move into national rate numbers, which cut the cost of calls from 70p to 10p a minute, raised the number of customers to 2m in 2004, and pushed up sales 73% a year from £2.3m in 2001 to £11.8m in 2004.
