Undercutting pound shops everywhere, this retailer sells everything at 99p from its 150 outlets nationwide. Chief executive Nadir Lalani opened the first of his 99p Stores in 2001 and aims to have 300 by 2013. Well-known brands make up 70% of products sold, and the company’s success has extended to more affluent areas such as the New Forest and St Albans. It recently launched Family Bargains, a budget brand not constrained by the 99p price tag. Stores are serviced from a new HQ and warehouse complex in Northampton and sales reached a record £231m this year, up 26% on 2010.
