Founded in 2001 when Nadir Lalani opened his first store in London, 99p Stores now operates 134 outlets, and serves more than a million customers every week. As one might expect, everything on the shelves costs no more than 99p. Benefiting from the recession, the company has recently launched Family Bargains, a new retail chain that will not be restrained by the 99p price tag. In 2010, sales reached £183.5m, representing a 63% increase on the previous year.
