A4e claims to ‘improve people’s lives’. The Sheffield company tenders for government contracts and implements programmes to regenerate deprived areas and get unemployed people back to work. For example, this year it helped ethnic minority groups develop bids for lottery funding. It also runs two Business Links, which provide advice for companies in County Durham and Humberside. Founded in 1991 by Emma Harrison, A4e now has 80 offices nationwide. Its sales have grown 64% a year from £8.1m in 1999 to £35.9m in 2002.
