Founder Jonathan Milner’s vision for a company selling antibodies online came from the difficulty he had in obtaining them from catalogues while doing research at Cambridge University. Since 1998, Abcam has been supplying laboratories in 50 countries, as well as charities and academics, all from a website similar to Amazon’s.
The antibodies track proteins in the human genome project. Sales have risen 121% a year from £720,000 in 2001 to £3.5m in 2003.
