Selling antibodies to scientists online, this Cambridge company says that it introduces new products at a rate of 500 a month – many of them in the blue-sky areas of research into stem cells and chromatin, which controls how genetic information is replicated. Abcam was founded in 1998 by Jonathan Milner when he became frustrated with trying to find antibodies while doing research at university. Driven by demand from pharmaceutical companies and laboratories worldwide, sales rose 93% a year from £1.8m in 2002 to £6.7m in 2004.
