Academia

Founder Mike Bacon started Academia in 2003 with savings of £5,000, and the Enfield company now sells equipment and IT consultancy services to many of Britain’s higher education institutions. Customers include Oxford and Cambridge universities, as well as students and small businesses. Sales grew 81% a year, from £3.8m in 2008 to £22.9m in 2011, driven by proprietary ordering software that dovetails with customers’ procurement systems, encouraging them to stay with Academia. It has also expanded internationally, and bought a stake in a Finnish reseller in 2011.
