Academia was founded by managing director Mike Bacon in 2003 to target the education sector. It supplies hardware and software as well as services such as training. Apple products, such as iPads, and Adobe software are particularly strong sellers. The company counts 90% of Britain’s higher education institutions among its customers, including Oxford and Cambridge universities, and also sells to students and small businesses. Sales growth of 72% a year, from £2.1m in 2007 to £10.9m in 2010, has been driven by proprietary ordering software that dovetails with customers’ procurement systems, encouraging them to stay with Academia, which is based in north London.
