There seem to be countless online booking services, but Active Hotels is one of the few that has helped to open doors for small and medium-sized hotels. The Cambridge company has built up a database of 7,500 hotels that otherwise would struggle to get bookings through the web. It markets them through 1,500 high-traffic partner sites such as Multimap and Avis as well as travel agents. Founded by Andy Phillipps and Adrian Critchlow in 1999, Active Hotels has raised £3.7m of venture-capital funding from Close Brothers and business angels. It was recently acquired by Priceline.com, a US company, for a reported £90m.
The firm has boosted its sales 306% a year from £435,000 in 2001 to £7.2m in 2003.
