Managing director Seamus Shields, 51, had only £27 in his pocket when he decided to hitchhike from Ireland to Britain to seek a career in business. The construction firm he founded in 1993 now provides groundworks and civil engineering services for residential and commercial developments. Completing projects and operational efficiencies helped profits grow to £11.7m last year, despite an overall decline in sales to £190.1m.
