Drivers at AF Blakemore were among the first in Britain to benefit from the new working-time directives that come into effect in March 2005. They negotiated a 27% pay rise and a nine-hour cut in their working week. This family-owned company, founded in 1917, supplies 750 Spar convenience stores in the Midlands and owns about 200 of them. It also operates cash-and-carry shops and provides a shopfitting service. Its sales totalled £542m in the year to April 2003.
