This business started in 1917 when Arthur Blakemore opened a small shop in Wolverhampton. Peter Blakemore, 69, his grandson, is now managing director of the group, which supplies groceries to 1,100 Spar stores as well as to garages, pub chains and hospitals. Two years ago, the Willenhall-based group acquired rival wholesaler Capper & Co, which contributed to a 28% rise in group sales in 2012, reaching £1.1bn for the first time. It owns 320 of the Spar stores it supplies.
