Alban Communications is a ‘new media’ company, designed to respond to shifts in corporate advertising strategies after the break-up of the UK’s television monopolies. In a ‘multi-channel world’ where advertisers can no longer rely on TV for access to mass audiences, Alban has exploited a growing market for billboard campaigns, once viewed as the outmoded domain of beer and cigarette promotions. Recent stunts have included projecting a laser image of David Beckham onto the White Cliffs of Dover to promote football boots. Profits have grown by 41% pa from £1.2m in 1995 to £3.3m in 1998. Sales increased by 28% pa in the same period to reach £112.2m. After a brief period of ownership by Welsh HTV television, Alban’s directors bought out the London-based company in 1993 for £2.2m.
