When Francis Wallinger’s employer rejected the computer system he had developed to handle large direct mailings, he resigned. After buying his system from the company, he started up in a small office in Wokingham, Berkshire, in 1996. Alchemetrics is a direct-marketing bureau that specialises in managing marketing databases, typically those with up to 60m names, for clients such as Telewest and Emap. ‘Telewest, for example, has a wide-ranging marketing database,’ says Wallinger. ‘We collate information from many different databases, make sure it is constantly updated and that our clients have online access to it so they can run their campaigns.’ Sales have grown 98% a year from £435,000 in 1997 to £3.4m in 2000, when Alchemetrics employed 55 people.
