Alcontrol operates laboratories that check food, soil and air to see if they meet legal standards for customers such as water utilities. The company has acquired six testing labs across Europe in the past five years, which have delivered economies of scale and entry to new, profitable markets, including asbestos testing. Bridgepoint Capital bought the business from the Yorkshire water group Kelda in 2000, and last December sold it to Candover for £240m. Profits at Alcontrol rose 60% a year from an annualised £2m in 2001 to £8.2m in 2004.
