Last year Alpha Micro won a £680,000 contract to supply modems to the national lottery. The modems enable each ticket machine in a newsagent or other outlet to transfer lottery numbers to a central computer as players buy their tickets. Founded in 1995 by Christos Papakyriacou, John Moore and Nick Robins, the company also sells semiconductors, electronic components and modems to the likes of Sony and IBM. Sales of the Basingstoke company increased 67% a year from £1.1m in 1997 to £4.9m in 2000, when it had just 14 staff.
