Set up in 1996, Alphatec Software started as a consultancy but later developed a software package, Orbit, capable of extracting and analysing data from different IT systems in the cheque-clearing divisions of banks. Alphatec’s biggest customer is EDS, the IT outsourcing giant, which used Orbit in the merger of Royal Bank of Scotland and NatWest. Sales of the Milton Keynes business, founded by Grant Browning and Ted Taylor, grew 98% a year, from £430,000 in 1998 to £1.7m in 2000.
