Eighty-two pubs across north England and the Midlands are owned and operated by Amber Taverns. Founder and chairman Clive Preston, 76, came out of a nine-month retirement to set up a pub chain in 2001, which he sold before starting Amber Taverns in 2005 with backing from venture capitalists. The company has contracts with Heineken and Sky TV so that its pubs can offer extensive sports coverage and competitive beer prices. In 2010, LGV Capital bought an 82% stake from the original investors Acuity Capital, Unicorn Asset Management and Maxcap Partners.
