Ambition Recruitment places several thousand nurses each week in jobs at NHS hospitals, nursing homes and mental health clinics. The firm specialises in providing emergency, or ‘spot’, cover – for example, when a nurse calls in sick. It also offers to train its workers as care assistants, and recently started new divisions to provide locum doctors, social workers and home-care assistants. Ambition was founded by Penny Streeter in 1996 with her mother, who still has a role in the business. It has 19 branches, and its sales have risen 72% a year from £11.6m in 2000 to £59m in 2003.
