Users of many of the world’s mobile-phone networks may not be aware that Apertio’s software manages the servers that hold information on the callers. Co-founded by a team including Wallace Ascham and Michael Welbourne, the company has raised a total of £23m from corporate and venture-capital backers such as Motorola Ventures, Eden, Deutsche Venture Capital and Add Partners. Winning larger contracts from customers such as Orange UK and Motorola has helped the Bristol business to achieve growth of 300% a year with sales rising from £533,000 in 2003 to £8.5m in 2005, when the company made a large loss.
