Hard lessons learnt a decade ago have helped Kai Midgley make a success of Apex Contractors. The roofing business he started in the 1980s ceased trading when his partner left the company. Midgley set up Apex in 1991 from the ashes of this venture. Contracts for breweries, insurance companies, councils and housing associations in the London area have pushed up sales 71% a year from £1.7m in 1998 to £8.5m in 2001, when the Kent company had 120 staff.
