Starting in 1949 growing flowers near Manchester, this family-owned firm now supplies 55m punnets of tomatoes each year to Tesco, the Co-op and Iceland. It buys in tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers from growers in Spain and Poland, and from its associated businesses in Cheshire and Kent. The products are then graded, packed and distributed. Growth is thanks to Tesco consolidating its suppliers, and growing demand for home-grown fruit. Sales under managing director Mark Pearson grew 72% a year, from £6.9m in 2007 to £35m in 2010, though margins were very slim.
