Sir Arnold Clark will spend £4m on improving his car showrooms this year in a bid to stay ahead of the competition. The firm that claims to be Britain’s largest independent car dealership chain had a good 2005, with sales up £79m to £1,670m. The 78-year-old father of 10 started trading in 1954. Two years later he opened his first dealership in Glasgow, where the firm is now based. The company has 135 dealerships, and generates 80% of its sales in Scotland.
