A knighthood in January capped a strong year for Arnold Clark, who owns this chain of more than 100 car dealerships. Clark, a father of 10, set up his first dealership in 1954 in Glasgow, and his company is now one of Scotland’s largest employers, with a staff of 6,410. Despite being 76, he continues to drive the business forward. Sales in 2003 rose by nearly £300m to £1,450m.
