Arqiva provides the infrastructure behind much of the nation’s television, radio and wireless communications. It has seven international teleports uploading programmes to satellite for customers that include ITV, Channel 4, Five, the BBC and BSkyB. Formed when Macquarie led the purchase of NTL’s broadcast unit for £1.3 billion in 2005, the Hampshire company also operates 3,500 radio tower sites. Chief executive Tom Bennie took sales to £355.1m and profits to £103m in 2007. Further growth is likely after Macquarie bought National Grid’s wireless unit for £2.5 billion in April to merge with Arqiva.
