Responding to the pandemic, Arup’s engineers designed intensive care beds that could be built quickly and developed ways of converting industrial oxygen supplies for clinical use. The design and engineering consultancy is chiefly known for signature projects such as the Sydney Opera House, San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art and the City of Manchester football stadium. Led by chairman Alan Belfield, 64, it is also working with the Scottish government to assess hydrogen’s potential as a national energy source.
