Founded by Irish brothers Neil and Aiden Kelly with £10k, Ashbourne Communications in Middlesex has grown from £7.2m in 1994 to £37m in 1997. Launched as a cable network installation company, the Kellys quickly realised that broadening the services they offered to include everything from digging the trenches to laying the cables outside the home to installing the cable boxes inside, would make for greater profits down the road. The transition wasn’t easy, confesses finance director Michael Duffin. He estimates it’s taken three years to hone and bring in-house the skills necessary to make the switch. The net results have been worth it. Ashbourne has increased its market share, turnover, and profit margins every year in what Duffin sees as a dwindling cable installation marketplace.
