“You can’t plan for things you don’t know, and the biggest unknown in data handling is the data itself,” says Avellino’s founder and chief executive Tony Rodriguez. The Berkshire company, founded in 1997, develops software that profiles and checks data for clients such as Abbey National and BT.
Avellino’s technology even checks data phonetically, to find mistakes caused by bad spelling. It has spotted some costly and embarrassing errors. “One insurance client discovered they had a million more customers in their database than they thought they had,” says Rodriguez. Sales have grown by 95% a year from an annualised £1.2m in 1999 to £4.6m in 2001.
