Bulgaria is said to be one of this year’s hot holiday destinations. If true, it is good news for Balkan Holidays. Founded in 1966 by the Bulgarian government, and acquired by its present owners in 1999, the firm specialises in beach and skiing packages to Bulgaria, but also offers holidays in Croatia, Slovenia and Romania. Most of its sales come through leading travel agents such as Thomas Cook and MyTravel, but about a fifth of holidays are sold direct. Profits grew 70% a year from £713,000 in 2001 to £3.5m in 2004.
